As a homeowner myself, I understand the importance of home security and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your property is protected. A key lock box has become an integral part of my home security system, and I owe a significant portion of my peace of mind to this reliable access solution.

Gone are the days of leaving spare keys under doormats or relying on neighbors to hold onto them. With a key lock box, I can securely store spare keys for family members, trusted friends, or service providers, granting them access when needed without compromising security.

In this blog, I’ll share my top recommendation for key lock box along with other notable options that I have tested and tried in the past. I will also share the list of factors that I considered while making the purchase.

Factors to Consider While Choosing A Key Lock Box

When you are trusting a device to hold all the security access (aka keys) to your home/property, you should make the decision wisely. When I was selecting one for myself, I took time to think of various factors that should be considered before making the purchase. Here are those factors –

  • Size and Capacity: Determine how many keys you need to store in the lockbox and choose an appropriate size and capacity. While, the more the better might seem an extremely plausible choice but it increases the cost. So get realistic and then decide. We figured out that we needed our key lock box to hold a maximum of 5 keys.
  • Construction Material: The primary purpose of a key safe is to securely store keys therefore it becomes obvious that its own construction is done with metal rather than plastic. Trust me, it goes a long way in ensuring the safety of your key lock box.
  • Type of Lock on Key Safe: There are various access mechanisms available in the market ranging from combination or biometric to access the inside of key safe. While biometric access does look cool, straight out of sci-fi movies, I wanted a combination one. And my reason was simple. I didn’t want any hassle of biometrics going wrong and me being stranded outside of my own home.
  • Durability and Weather Resistance: If the key lock box will be installed outdoors, ensure it is made of durable materials that can withstand various weather conditions, such as rain, snow, or extreme temperatures.
  • Ease of Use: A user-friendly lock box simplifies access and minimizes potential issues. Look for a design with straightforward instructions for setting the combination or programming. Prefer a box with hooks or compartments for organized storage.
  • Mounting Options: Check if the lockbox can be easily mounted on walls, fences, or other secure surfaces. Some models come with pre-drilled holes and mounting hardware, making installation hassle-free.
  • Price: Compare the prices of different lock boxes with similar features to find one that fits within your budget. Remember that investing in a higher-quality, more secure lock box can provide better long-term value and peace of mind. At the same time, you don’t want to splurge too much without getting any potential benefit out of extra dollars spent.

The Best Key Lock Box: Master Lock Key Lock Box (Personally Using)

Now, let’s talk about the heart of this blog – the best key lock box. As a lock expert, I can confidently say that the Master Lock Key Lock Box is an outstanding security solution, setting the bar high for key lock boxes. I have been using this lockbox for close to a year now and can say that it is undoubtedly the best key lock box for outside.

Read my extensive review of Master Lock 5400D lock box here.

Let me delve into the specifics of its remarkable features:

Construction Material & Type of Lock: Master Lock Key Lock box is built with metal that provides durability to the key safe. The shackles are Vinyl coated to prevent it from rust and dirt. It comes with combination lock access (4 digit) which is what I wanted. I can set my own combination and don’t have to worry about a key.

Size and Capacity: The lock box strikes the perfect balance between size and capacity. Its exterior dimensions of 6-1/4 inches in height, 3-1/4 inches in width, and 1-1/2 inches in depth offer ample space to store up to 5 standard house keys securely. Inside, the interior dimensions of 1 inch in height, 2-13/32 inches in width, and 1 inch in depth keep the keys neatly organized and easily accessible.

It doesn’t have compartments for individual keys which is definitely one thing I wish it had.

Weather Resistance: The company claims it to be weather resistant, and for most parts, it is true as well. However, I would definitely not say that it is dirt resistant. Somehow even though the shackle is Vinyl coated, it doesn’t dust off dirt completely. On the other hand, the company claims that it is not water-resistant, but I’ve had no issues so far on this front.

Ease of Use: This lock box is designed with practicality in mind. Setting and resetting combinations is a straightforward process, and retrieving keys is quick and hassle-free. Its user-friendly nature makes it an ideal choice for homeowners and professionals alike.

Another thing that I like about this key safe is its large combination digits. It makes rotating the digits easier, unlike some other options available on the market.

Mounting Options: Versatility is the hallmark of this lock box. It features a shackle that fits most ball, biscuit, and tulip door knob styles, offering effortless mounting options for various types of doors. Additionally, the exterior dimensions allow for wall mounting, providing flexibility in installation. I have fitted it on my door knob and it works just fine.

Price: For the level of security and functionality it offers, this lock box is undoubtedly a wise investment. Its competitive price point makes it a cost-effective solution for those seeking a dependable key lock box.
